Valarie Short writes plays that are produced in local theater venues in Syracuse, NY. After graduating from Hampton University with a degree in theater with an emphasis in playwriting, she wrote many Christian plays as a drama director for her church. These days, she seeks to illuminate the African American diaspora experience through insightful plays and stories. She strives to write in a way so that the reader can step into another person’s shoes to wander about for a moment, hopefully to see and feel from another’s perspective.

This is her first nonfiction book. After living in Syracuse for decades, she began
researching the facts about Jerry’s rescue through historical remnants, and historical markers still available locally and gained additional information about how involved the African American community was in the abolitionist movement and rescue. This true historical event was worth re-telling for young learners.
